Aubusson, Savonnerie, & Tapestry Gallery
Although we associate rug weaving with the East, there is a important history of rug design in Europe. The most distinctly European style is that of the Savonnerie and Aubusson rugs from the 17th and 18th century France. These hand-woven textiles were both pile carpet and tapestries. They made frequent use naturalistic floral motifs, symbols from coats of arms, and architectural motifs. The tapestries often depicted landscapes any mythological scenes.
Our showrooms have examples of accurate modern reproductions of both the carpets and tapestries, which are available in a wide range of designs and sizes. The Aubussons and tapestries are flatwoven in a tapestry weave. The Pile Aubussons and Savonneries are pile rugs. Please contact us if you need a particular style, color, or size.
