Geometric Oriental Rug Gallery
What the rugs in this gallery have in common is geometric designs and bold colors. These rugs are based on designs of nomadic and cottage weaving from throughout Turkey, Persia, the Caucusus, and Central Asia.
Designs based on Caucasian rugs are particularly popular. The rugs of the western Caucasus - Kazak, Karabagh, and Gendje - tend to have large-scale patterns. Those of the eastern Caucus - the Shirvan, Kuba, Derbend - have a smaller scale.
Among the Persian designs the Heriz and Serapi are the most popular.
An interesting group of rugs are based on the designs of Khotan and neighboring oasis towns. As a midpoint on the ancient Great Silk Road, Khotan's rug tradition is a combination of Persian and Chinese design elements with some distinct local additions.
