Introducing our exquisite Afghan Mamluk Tribal Rug, a true masterpiece of craftsmanship. This rug originates from Afghanistan, specifically from the Esari Subtribe of ethnic Turkmen weavers. The wool used to create this rug comes from sheep in the Ghazni Province of South East Afghanistan. The mountainous terrain in this region naturally produces longer staple, oily, and higher quality wool, perfect for carpet weaving.

The raw Ghazni wool is then brought to the western side of Afghanistan, around Herat, where it undergoes a meticulous process. Hand carding and hand spinning turn the wool into carpet yarn, ready to be transformed into this stunning piece. The weaving of this rug takes place on traditional floor looms, in the weavers' own homes, following the cottage industry type production.

Featuring an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, this rug showcases an impressive level of artistry. The warp and weft are made of cotton, while the pile consists of high-quality wool. The double weft results in a heavily packed depressed warp weaving, ensuring the utmost durability and longevity.

This rug boasts a magnificent blue background, achieved through the use of natural indigo dye stuffs. Indigo, derived from the leaves of the indigo plant, has been utilized as a dye for thousands of years. Its vibrant blue hues have enchanted various cultures around the world.

Complementing the blue background is a striking red border, which derives its color from natural madder root dyes. Madder root, sourced from the Rubia tinctorum plant, has a long history as a dyeing agent. This natural dye can create a range of warm and cool red, orange, pink, and brown shades.

With a knots per square inch of 162, this rug exemplifies the meticulous attention to detail invested in its creation. Calculating based on the KPSI, we estimate that this rug consists of an astounding 2,320,172 individually hand-tied knots in total.

Measuring 8'9" x 11'5", this Afghan Mamluk Tribal Rug is a true testament to the skill and artistry of the weavers who brought it to life. Every thread tells a story, making this rug a remarkable addition to any collection or living space.
