Introducing our exquisite Afghan Mamluk tribal rug! This stunning piece originated in Afghanistan, in a region known for its skilled ethnic Turkmen weavers, particularly from the Esari Subtribe. The rug showcases a vibrant red background and a captivating green border, creating a captivating contrast.

Craftsmanship and Materials: Every aspect of this rug reflects the dedication and expertise of its makers. The wool used in the pile comes from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan, renowned for its mountainous terrain, which naturally produces longer staple, oily, higher quality wool for weaving. This raw wool is then taken to the western side of Afghanistan, around Herat, where it is carefully hand-carded and spun into yarn, ready for weaving.

The weaving process takes place on traditional floor looms in the weaver's homes, contributing to a cottage industry type of production. A distinctive asymmetrical "Persian" knot type is utilized, ensuring durability and longevity. The warp and weft are made of cotton, while the pile consists of soft, luxurious wool. The double wefted heavily packed depressed warp weaving results in one of the sturdiest and most resilient handwoven carpets available today.

Design and Colors: With its Mamluk design, this rug showcases a timeless tribal style that has captivated rug enthusiasts for centuries. Its intricate patterns and geometric motifs are a testament to the skill and artistry of the weavers.

The mesmerizing red hue is achieved through natural dyeing techniques using madder root. Madder root dyes, derived from the Rubia tinctorum plant, have a long history and have been cultivated for centuries in various parts of the world. They offer a range of warm and cool shades of red, orange, pink, and brown.

Size and Knots: Measuring 2'10" X 8'7", this Afghan Mamluk rug is the perfect size to complement a variety of living spaces. With a knot count of 162 knots per square inch, we calculated that the rug boasts an impressive 564,831 individually hand-tied knots in total. This meticulous attention to detail ensures a high level of craftsmanship and quality.

In summary, our Afghan Mamluk tribal rug represents not only a work of art but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage and expertise of the weavers. Its carefully selected materials, impeccable craftsmanship, and captivating design make it a truly exceptional piece that will enhance any space with its beauty and history.
