The wool used in the pile comes from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan, renowned for its mountainous terrain, which naturally produces longer staple, oily, higher quality wool for weaving. This raw wool is then taken to the western side of Afghanistan, around Herat, where it is carefully hand-carded and spun into yarn, ready for weaving.

The weaving process takes place on traditional floor looms in the weaver's homes, contributing to a cottage industry type of production. A distinctive asymmetrical "Persian" knot type is utilized, ensuring durability and longevity. The warp and weft are made of cotton, while the pile consists of soft, luxurious wool. The double wefted heavily packed depressed warp weaving results in one of the sturdiest and most resilient handwoven carpets available today.
