Originating from Afghanistan, our Mamluk design rug showcases a traditional tribal style with a silver background and a blue border. This new, handwoven rug is crafted with wool on cotton content, ensuring a durable and high-quality piece for your space.

The Mamluk design holds a rich history in the world of carpets. Scholars have debated the exact origin and time of production, but it is widely accepted that Mamluk carpets were created from the second half of the fifteenth century until the middle of the sixteenth century. These carpets were initially attributed to Damascus, Syria, but evidence of production in Cairo, Egypt has been discovered through excavations and eyewitness accounts. Mamluk carpets were used both domestically and imported, adorning religious and residential structures, and even lining the streets during processions. The design features geometric motifs and a range of colors, predominantly red with accents of blues, yellows, and greens.

Our rug has been woven by skilled Turkmen weavers, primarily from the Esari Subtribe, using wool sourced from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan. The mountainous terrain of this region provides the ideal conditions for the production of longer staple, oily, and high-quality wool used in carpet weaving. Raw Ghazni wool is then brought to the western side of Afghanistan, around Herat, where it is hand-carded and hand-spun into carpet yarn. Weaving takes place on traditional floor looms in the weavers' homes, reflecting a cottage industry style of production.

With an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, a cotton warp and weft, and an all-wool pile, our rug is double wefted and boasts a heavily packed depressed warp weaving technique, resulting in exceptional durability. The centuries-old dyeing process incorporates all-natural dye stuffs, ensuring authentic and vibrant colors.

Measuring approximately 10'2" x 13'10", our rug exhibits a knot count of 162 knots per square inch, with a total of 3,266,460 individually hand-tied knots. Its intricate design and attention to detail make it a stunning addition to any space.

Please note that the blue color in our rug comes from natural indigo dye stuffs, derived from the leaves of the indigo plant. Indigo, one of the oldest known dyes used by humans, has been widely utilized to create vibrant blue hues for thousands of years.

Embrace the rich history and craftsmanship of our Afghan Mamluk design rug, a true testament to traditional weaving techniques and the beauty of the tribal style.
