Introducing our exquisite Afghani rug, featuring the famous Harshang design. This tribal-style rug showcases a captivating medium blue background, which beautifully complements the vibrant red border. Crafted from high-quality materials, this rug consists of wool on cotton, creating a luxurious and durable piece.

Originating from Afghanistan, this rug is woven by talented ethnic Turkmen weavers, primarily from the Esari Subtribe. The wool used in this rug comes from sheep in the Ghazni Province of South East Afghanistan, known for its mountainous terrain that produces longer staple, oily, and higher quality wool for carpet weaving. The raw Ghazni wool is then transported to the western side of Afghanistan, specifically Herat, where it is carefully hand-carded and hand-spun into carpet yarn.

Using traditional floor looms in their own homes, these skilled weavers create this rug with an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type. The cotton warp and weft, combined with the wool pile, result in a double-wefted rug with heavily packed depressed warp weaving. This technique ensures the utmost durability, making it a truly remarkable example of handwoven craftsmanship.

To maintain its authenticity, this rug is dyed using all-natural colorants. The mesmerizing blue hue is derived from natural indigo dye stuffs, obtained from the leaves of the indigo plant. With a history dating back thousands of years, indigo has been widely used across cultures to create vibrant blue shades. Complementing the striking blue, we find the use of natural madder root dyes to achieve the rich red color. Madder root dyes, derived from the roots of the madder plant, have been cultivated for centuries and can produce a range of warm and cool red, orange, pink, and brown shades.

Measuring at 10'1" X 13'11", this rug boasts a knot density of 80 knots per square inch. Through careful calculation, we estimate a total of 1,597,006 individually hand-tied knots in this extraordinary piece. With its impeccable craftsmanship and alluring design, this Afghani Harshang rug is sure to enhance any living space with its timeless beauty and enduring quality.
