Introducing a unique and exquisite rug, we proudly present an Afghani masterpiece of exceptional craftsmanship. This rug features the traditional design of Harshang, showcasing the tribal style that is synonymous with Afghan rug weaving.
Originating from Afghanistan, this rug reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region. The weavers behind this creation are mostly from the Esari Subtribe, known for their impeccable weaving skills. The wool used in this rug comes from sheep in the Ghazni Province of South East Afghanistan, revered for their longer staple and higher quality wool. The mountainous terrain of Ghazni naturally contributes to the richness and oiliness of the wool, making it ideal for carpet weaving.
To bring this rug to life, the raw Ghazni wool is meticulously hand-carried to the western side of Afghanistan, near Herat. Here, skilled artisans hand-spin the wool into carpet yarn, preparing it for the weaving process. Each rug is woven on traditional floor looms, often within the weaver's own home or as part of cottage industry production.
Using the asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, this rug is woven with the utmost precision and care. The pile consists of high-quality wool, while the warp and weft are made of cotton, ensuring durability and longevity. The double-wefted, heavily packed depressed warp weaving technique employed in this rug makes it one of the most resilient and sturdy handwoven carpets available.
Embracing the centuries-old tradition, all-natural dye stuffs are used to achieve the vibrant blue hues of this rug. The color blue is derived from natural indigo dye stuffs, obtained from the leaves of the indigo plant (indigofera tinctoria). As one of the oldest known dyes used by humans, indigo has a rich history spanning thousands of years and has been cherished by various cultures globally.
With a knots-per-square-inch count of 104, this rug exemplifies the intricate attention to detail invested in its creation. By calculating the KPSI, we have determined that this rug features a remarkable 281,805 individually hand-tied knots in total. This exemplifies the dedication and artistry of the skilled weavers who have meticulously crafted this masterpiece.
Measuring at a size of 3'3" x 5'10", this rug is the perfect addition to any space, whether as a centerpiece or an accent. Its Afghan heritage and tribal design make it a unique and captivating piece that will undoubtedly enhance the aesthetic appeal of any room.
Immerse yourself in the beauty of this Afghani Harshang rug, a timeless treasure crafted with a meticulous attention to detail and a rich cultural heritage.
