This Afghani rug features a tribal Mamluk design, known for its geometric motifs and vibrant colors. The background of the rug is a striking turquoise, while the border is a rich jade. The main color of the rug is teal, creating a harmonious and eye-catching palette.

Crafted with care, this rug is made of wool on a cotton base, combining durability with a soft and luxurious feel. It measures 11'11" X 17'5", making it a substantial and statement-making piece for any space.

The Mamluk design has a fascinating history, with its origins in Cairo, Egypt. These carpets were produced from the late fifteenth century to the middle of the sixteenth century and continued to be made even after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517. Mamluk carpets were used both domestically and imported, adorning religious and residential structures. During processions, they were also used to line the streets, adding to their significance and value.

This particular rug has been woven by talented ethnic Turkmen weavers, mostly from the Esari subtribe in Afghanistan. The wool used in the rug comes from sheep in the Ghazni Province of South East Afghanistan, where the mountainous terrain produces high-quality, longer staple wool. The raw Ghazni wool is then hand carted and spun into carpet yarn in the western side of Afghanistan, around Herat.

The rug is woven on traditional floor looms in people's own homes, adhering to a cottage industry production method. The weaving technique used is asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, resulting in a durable and long-lasting rug. The cotton warp and weft, combined with the double wefted heavily packed depressed warp weaving, ensures the rug's durability and strength.

What makes this rug even more extraordinary is the use of centuries-old, all-natural dye stuffs. It captures the essence of traditional craftsmanship and provides a unique and authentic aesthetic.

With a knots per square inch of 162, this rug showcases meticulous handiwork. In total, it has an astounding 4,820,516 individually hand-tied knots, exemplifying the dedication and skill of the weavers.

Perfect for adding a touch of elegance and character to your space, this Afghani Mamluk rug offers a timeless and unique design, along with exceptional craftsmanship. Whether you're looking to complement a contemporary or traditional interior, this rug is sure to make a statement.
