Introducing our exquisite Afghani rug, featuring a captivating design inspired by the renowned Sultanabad style. This tribal rug showcases a medium blue background that beautifully contrasts with a rust border, creating a visually striking piece for any space.
Crafted with utmost care and expertise, this rug is made using high-quality wool sourced from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan. The mountainous terrain in this region allows for the growth of longer staple, oily wool ideal for carpet weaving. The raw Ghazni wool is then brought to the western side of Afghanistan, specifically around Herat, where it is meticulously hand-carted and hand-spun into carpet yarn, ready for weaving.
Using traditional floor looms, skilled weavers, primarily from the Esari Subtribe, bring this rug to life in their own homes as part of a cottage industry production. Employing the asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, they create a durable masterpiece with a cotton warp and weft, while the pile is made entirely of wool.
The timeless beauty of this rug is further enhanced by the use of centuries-old, all-natural dye stuffs. The captivating blue color is achieved through the utilization of natural indigo dyes, derived from the leaves of the indigo plant (indigofera tinctoria). With a history dating back thousands of years, indigo has been prized by various cultures worldwide for its ability to produce vibrant, enduring blue hues.
With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 80, this handwoven rug exudes a remarkable level of craftsmanship. In fact, we meticulously counted each knot and determined that there are an astonishing 811,831 individually hand-tied knots in the entirety of this rug. This speaks to the dedication and skill of the weavers, ensuring its longevity and durability.
Measuring 2'8" x 26'9", this Afghani Sultanabad tribal rug is a testament to the rich artistic heritage and exceptional craftsmanship from the region. It is certain to add a touch of elegance and cultural allure to any space it graces.
