Introducing our exquisite Afghan Sultanabad Tribal Rug! Originating from Afghanistan, this rug showcases the timeless beauty of the Sultanabad design. The background of this rug features a soothing light blue tone, while the border is elegantly adorned with a sage hue. The main color of this rug is a captivating shade of blue, adding depth and character to any space.
Crafted with meticulous care, this Afghan Sultanabad Tribal Rug is a true work of art. It is made using traditional techniques by skilled ethnic Turkmen weavers, primarily from the Esari Subtribe. The wool used in this rug comes from sheep residing in the Ghazni Province of South East Afghanistan. The mountainous terrain of this region naturally produces longer staple, oily, and higher quality wool, perfect for carpet weaving.
This raw Ghazni wool is then transported to the western side of Afghanistan around Herat, where it undergoes the meticulous process of hand carding and hand spinning to create the carpet yarn. The weaving itself takes place on traditional floor looms in the weavers' own homes, contributing to a cottage industry type of production.
Featuring an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, this rug boasts a cotton warp and weft with an all-wool pile. The weaving technique includes a double weft and heavily packed depressed warp, resulting in a rug that is not only visually stunning but also extraordinarily durable.
Adding to its authenticity and charm, this Afghan Sultanabad Tribal Rug is dyed using centuries-old, all-natural dye stuffs. The captivating blue color is derived from natural indigo dye, sourced from the leaves of the indigo plant (indigofera tinctoria). Indigo has a rich history dating back thousands of years and has been revered for its ability to produce vibrant blue hues.
With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 80, this rug showcases the exceptional craftsmanship invested in its creation. In fact, we calculated that this rug boasts a staggering total of 1,189,588 individually hand-tied knots!
Measuring at a generous size of 8 '10" x 11'10", this Afghan Sultanabad Tribal Rug is the perfect addition to elevate your space with its captivating design, enduring quality, and rich cultural heritage.
