The featured rug originates from India and is designed in the Bakshaish style with transitional elements. It boasts a background in soft peach complemented by a gold border, and its main color is a subtle beige. This rug is crafted from high-quality wool on a cotton foundation.
This newly woven rug undergoes a rigorous final washing and multiple finishing processes in Jaipur. Chromium dyes are utilized for their color accuracy, light fastness, and consistency, enhancing the extra antique finishing. While most rugs are woven by smaller contractors in villages outside of Jaipur, some are produced as far west as Bikaner. The weavers, who primarily work from home, are paid by the square meter. Larger rugs, wider than 10 feet, are typically made in villages that accommodate stationary horizontal looms.
The rugs from Rajasthan feature an asymmetrical Persian type knotting, providing a unique texture and contributing to the vintage, worn appearance. The blend of Ghazni wool from Afghanistan and South African wool adds to the rug's quality. The double wefted foundation includes a dense bottom weft with up to 10 plies of cotton and a finer, upper weft. The shearing process reveals bright white yarns, creating a speckled effect that enhances the rug's visual texture, mimicking the look of aged antique rugs.
The designs are inspired by antique Persian and Khotanese carpets, with a mix of traditional and modern colorations. This particular rug has a knot density of 104 knots per square inch, totaling 1,186,584 individually hand-tied knots.
The rug's visual presentation is a harmonious blend of muted tones and intricate patterns, resulting in an aged and rustic appearance. Dominant shades include subdued beige, taupe, hints of muted pink, and dusty yellow, with faint greyish hues enhancing its vintage look. The pattern features abstract forms, small floral designs, geometric shapes, and traditional motifs, providing a visually complex and dynamic appearance. The absence of defined borders allows the design to flow seamlessly from edge to edge, offering a continuous feel.
Although there is no strict symmetry, the pattern distribution is balanced yet irregular, with motifs spread in an artful manner. The density of the patterns varies, with some areas densely packed and others more sparsely decorated, creating depth and visual interest. This rug does not include a prominent central medallion, but its overall design remains engaging and artistically compelling.
