Introducing our exquisite rug from Afghanistan, this handwoven masterpiece showcases a contemporary design known as "Butterfly in the Sky." Originating from the Ghazni Province in Southeast Afghanistan, this rug is crafted by skilled Ethnic Turkmen weavers, predominantly from the Esari Subtribe.
The craftsmanship behind this rug is truly remarkable. The wool used in its creation is sourced from sheep grazing in the mountainous terrain of the Ghazni Province, known for producing longer staple and higher quality wool. The raw Ghazni wool is then transported to the western side of Afghanistan, specifically Herat, where it undergoes the meticulous process of hand carding and spinning to create the yarn for the rug.
Woven on traditional floor looms within the weavers' own homes, this rug embodies the essence of a cottage industry. Every knot is meticulously tied using an asymmetrical "Persian" knot technique. The foundation of the rug consists of a cotton warp and weft, while the pile is made entirely of wool.
The durability of this rug is unparalleled. The double wefted construction and densely packed depressed warp weaving result in a resilient and long-lasting piece. Each vibrant color derives from centuries-old, all-natural dye stuffs, ensuring a rich and authentic hue.
One of the prominent features of this rug is its background color, which is a captivating sky blue. This intricate design is accentuated by a rust-colored border, creating a stunning contrast. Notably, the blue color in this rug is derived from natural indigo dye stuffs. Natural indigo, known as indigofera tinctoria or true indigo, has been used for centuries by various cultures worldwide to produce vivid blue shades.
Measuring at 4'1" in width and 5'11" in length, this rug showcases a density of 80 knots per square inch. With a total of 274,953 hand-tied knots, the level of detail and craftsmanship in this rug is truly extraordinary.
Experience the beauty and artistry of this Afghan rug, a testament to the mastery and dedication of the weavers who bring it to life. Add a touch of elegance to your space with this exquisite contemporary piece.
