Introducing the magnificent Harshang rug with its rich rust background and beautiful blue border. This rug originates from Afghanistan and showcases the stunning craftsmanship of the ethnic Turkmen weavers, predominantly from the Esari Subtribe.

The wool used in this rug comes from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan, where the mountainous terrain naturally produces longer staple, oily, and higher quality wool. The raw Ghazni wool is then hand carted and spun into carpet yarn on the western side of Afghanistan, around Herat.

Using traditional floor looms in their own homes, the weavers employ the asymmetrical "Persian" knot technique to create this masterpiece. The warp and weft are made from cotton, while the pile consists of wool. The double wefted heavily packed depressed warp weaving ensures the utmost durability, making this rug a testament to the time-honored traditions of carpet weaving.

This rug features centuries-old natural dye stuffs, resulting in its captivating colors. The exquisite blue hues are derived from natural indigo dye stuffs, sourced from the leaves of the indigo plant. Known for its vibrant tones, indigo has been used for thousands of years in various cultures worldwide.

Additionally, the rug showcases the beauty of natural madder root dyes, used to achieve the luscious red tones. Madder root dyes, derived from the roots of the madder plant, have a long history of use in dyeing. They offer a range of warm and cool red, orange, pink, and brown shades, adding depth and character to the rug.

With a knot density of 80 knots per square inch, we have calculated that this rug has a staggering total of 1,337,228 individually hand-tied knots. This meticulous attention to detail ensures the rug's exceptional quality and longevity.

Measuring 10'0" X 11'9", this Harshang rug is a true work of art that will bring warmth, elegance, and authenticity to any space. In its presence, you will experience the rich heritage and craftsmanship of Afghan rug weaving.
