Introducing our exquisite rug from Afghanistan, featuring a captivating design of two killer whales and a shark on a medium blue background. The contemporary style of this rug adds a modern touch to its traditional craftsmanship. The border, in a rust color, complements the overall design beautifully.

This rug, crafted by skilled ethnic Turkmen weavers, predominantly from the Esari Subtribe, showcases their expertise and attention to detail. The wool used in this rug is sourced from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan, known for its mountainous terrain that yields longer staple, oily, and higher quality wool ideal for carpet weaving.

To ensure the utmost durability and longevity, the raw Ghazni wool is brought to the western side of Afghanistan, near Herat, where it is hand carted and hand spun into carpet yarn. The rug is then woven on traditional floor looms, utilizing the asymmetrical "Persian" knot type. The cotton warp and weft, combined with a woolen pile, result in a double wefted, heavily packed, and depressed warp weaving technique that produces one of the most durable handwoven carpets of today.

This exceptional rug is colored with centuries-old, all-natural dye stuffs, including natural indigo. The blue hues derived from natural indigo dyes, obtained from the leaves of the indigo plant (indigofera tinctoria), have been utilized by humans for thousands of years. This rug's vibrant blue color is a testament to the rich history and timeless beauty of natural indigo dyes.

With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 80, this rug exemplifies the meticulous craftsmanship of its creators. Having calculated the KPSI, we estimate that this rug boasts a remarkable 603,173 individually hand-tied knots in total.
