This rug originates from India and features a large fish design in a transitional style. The background is designed to resemble the ocean, with a dominant deep blue color, while the border showcases a shrimp motif. The rug is primarily blue in color and is constructed from wool woven onto a cotton foundation.
Produced in Rajasthan, the final washing and multiple finishing processes are carried out in Jaipur. Chromium dyes are utilized for their color accuracy and consistency, especially given the extra antique finishing that the rugs undergo. The rugs are woven by smaller contractors who distribute the designs and pre-dyed, hand-spun wools to various villages, mostly outside Jaipur and as far as Bikaner. Weavers are contracted and paid by the square meter, working primarily in their homes. Larger rugs, over 10 feet in width, are typically produced in villages equipped with stationary horizontal looms.
Rajasthan rugs employ an asymmetrical Persian type knot, known for its suitability to these designs due to the ribbed texture at the collar or bottom of the wool knot. The wool is a blend of Ghazni wool from Afghanistan and South African wool. The foundation is double wefted, with a thick bottom weft consisting of up to 10 plies of dense cotton and a finer upper weft that is pure white. This construction technique, combined with the shearing down of the rug, creates visible speckles of white weft, adding another layer of texture and giving an overall lighter appearance, similar to vintage rugs. The designs are primarily based on antique Persian and Khotanese carpets, mixing traditional and modern coloration.
This particular rug boasts a knots-per-square-inch (KPSI) of 104, resulting in approximately 817,351 individually hand-tied knots. The wool-cotton construction ensures durability while maintaining the detailed and vibrant aquatic design.
Visually, the rug presents a whimsical aquatic theme, featuring various colorful fish and sea creatures swimming against the deep blue ocean-like background. The design includes around eight intricately patterned fish in shades of red, beige, yellow, green, and blue. These fish are stylized and cartoonish, contributing to the whimsical aesthetic. Additionally, the rug includes small seahorses and smaller fish silhouettes in beige and light blue, subtly blending with the background. The deep blue background itself has a subtle texture, resembling moving water with small, faint circular patterns that mimic bubbles, enhancing the underwater effect.
