Originating from India and following the Oushak design tradition, this transitional style rug showcases an appealing mix of traditional and contemporary elements. The primary background color is a soothing denim blue complemented by a green border, creating a serene visual effect. The rug's main color palette is dominated by various shades of blue, making it a versatile piece for a range of interior designs. It is handwoven using wool on a cotton foundation, ensuring durability and a soft texture.
This newly woven rug has undergone final washing and finishing processes in Jaipur. The use of chromium dyes guarantees color accuracy, lightfastness, and consistency, especially with the additional antique finishing processes these rugs experience. The rugs are produced by smaller contractors who distribute designs and hand-spun, pre-dyed wools to weavers in villages predominantly outside Jaipur, extending to places as distant as Bikaner. The weaving, done primarily on stationary horizontal looms, employs the asymmetrical Persian knot, contributing to the rug's ribbed texture and vintage appearance.
The rug is constructed with a blend of Ghazni wool from Afghanistan and South African wool, providing a rich, tactile feel. It features a double wefted foundation with a thick bottom weft made of dense cotton and a finer upper weft, which becomes visible upon shearing, imitating the wear patterns of antique rugs. This intricate construction adds another layer of texture and a lighter overall appearance due to the white yarn that pops through after shearing. The design inspirations stem from antique Persian and Khotanese carpets, merging traditional patterns with modern aesthetics.
The intricate and organized design of the rug balances traditional motifs with contemporary elements. The repeating geometric pattern includes medallion-like shapes, utilizing a harmonious color scheme of blues, soft greens, beiges, and muted browns and grays. The multiple borders are meticulously detailed, with the outermost narrow band in soft beige containing small square and floral motifs in darker blue. The inner borders feature concentrated geometric shapes and floral details in the rug’s primary colors.
The high degree of symmetry along both vertical and horizontal axes ensures a balanced and cohesive look. The moderate to high pattern density includes closely placed motifs, creating a visually rich texture without being overwhelming. The negative spaces in shades of beige and light blue break up the pattern and add depth. Instead of a single central medallion, the rug showcases a repeating pattern of smaller medallion-like shapes in varying light shades, standing out against the darker background. The rug has a knot density of 104 knots per square inch, amounting to a total of 2,145,754 individually hand-tied knots, highlighting the remarkable craftsmanship involved in its creation.
