Introducing our exquisite and captivating Serapi design rug from Afghanistan. This tribal-style rug showcases a stunning medium blue background that is beautifully complemented by a brick border, creating a harmonious and visually engaging design. Crafted with utmost care and precision, this rug features a blend of wool and cotton, ensuring both comfort and durability.

Originating from the talented ethnic Turkmen weavers, mostly from the Esari Subtribe, this rug is a testament to their exceptional craftsmanship. The wool used in this rug is sourced from sheep in the Ghazni Province of South East Afghanistan, renowned for its mountainous terrain that produces longer staple oily higher quality wool, ideal for carpet weaving. The raw Ghazni wool is then transported to Herat on the western side of Afghanistan, where it is skillfully hand carted and hand spun into carpet yarn, ready for weaving.

Woven on traditional floor looms in the weavers' own homes, this rug exemplifies cottage industry production. The handwoven nature of our rug features an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type and a cotton warp and weft, with an all-wool pile. The double wefted heavily packed depressed warp weaving technique used ensures its longevity and durability, making it one of the most resilient handwoven carpets available.

With centuries-old, all-natural dye stuffs, this rug boasts a mesmerizing blue color that stems from the use of natural indigo dye. Derived from the leaves of the indigo plant, natural indigo dyes, also known as indigofera tinctoria or true indigo, have been used by humans for thousands of years to produce vibrant blue hues. The history and significance of indigo dyes contribute to the cultural richness and timelessness of this rug.

Measuring an impressive 9'10" x 13'8", this rug features a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 80, reflecting the meticulous attention to detail poured into its creation. With a total of 1,529,433 individually hand-tied knots, it is a true testament to the skill and dedication of the weavers.

Immerse yourself in the beauty and heritage of this Afghan Serapi rug, as it brings an aura of culture, elegance, and warmth to any space it graces.
