Do oversized rugs need a rug pad?

Yes. A rug pad will keep the rug from shifting underfoot and add a layer of cushioning, while spreading the weight of furniture so the pile wears more evenly. A felt-and-rubber pad tends to work best at these dimensions, since felt alone can struggle to grip a heavy rug. Cut the pad an inch or two smaller than the rug on each side so it stays hidden. 

How do you clean and care for an oversized handwoven rug?

Vacuum without the beater bar, blot spills right away with cool water and a mild solution, and skip harsh chemicals or steam. Rotate the rug periodically to promote even wear and opt for professional rug cleaning services to preserve the wool and dyes.
