Introducing the "Soft Melody" collection in rug quality, a traditional Oushak design originating from India. Handwoven by skilled artisans in and around the city of Agra, these rugs embrace centuries-old craftsmanship practices.
Key to the quality of the Soft Melody rug is its material composition. It is made from a luxurious blend of imported, long-staple New Zealand wool (comprising 50-75% of the blend) and either superior local wool or South African wool. This combination results in a shinier, more lustrous finish compared to rugs made solely from local wools. The imported New Zealand wool is carefully hand-carded and hand-spun into yarn, contributing to the local economic sustainability.
What makes these rugs unique is the yarn's single-ply characteristic. Each knot of the Soft Melody rug incorporates a single thread, creating a thicker, denser, and substantially heavier yarn. This, along with the use of an asymmetrical Persian-type knot, gives the rug a denser, nubbier texture with visibly pronounced knots, adding to its distinctive tactile and visual appeal.
The Soft Melody rugs are known for their 6x6 quality, which reflects the intricate craftsmanship involved. This density contributes to the rug's robustness and intricate design clarity.
Additionally, these rugs have a 100% wool pile and are constructed with cotton foundations. They are mostly double-wefted and have a pile height of approximately 3/8 inch. The handspun nature of the yarn creates subtle color variations, resulting in each rug having a unique aesthetic due to the artisanal dyeing techniques.
A crucial aspect of these rugs' longevity is their coloration. They use chromium (or chrome) dyes, which resist fading and maintain their vibrant hues over time. This is unlike rugs that use inferior synthetic dyes. The high-quality chromium dyes, primarily imported from Switzerland, are applied to the wool in India, combining international and local resources.
Soft Melody Oushak rugs are particularly sought after for their resemblance to traditional 19th-century Turkish Oushaks. They are distinct due to the use of a single ply of very thick yarn, resulting in a delightful nubby texture, especially noticeable at the base of each knot. While antique Oushaks often have a worn appearance due to age, this adds depth and character to the rug. In contrast to rugs with thicker piles that may mask the texture, the subdued pile of Soft Melody Oushaks allows the nubby texture to stand out, enhancing the rug's visual appeal.
