This antique rug originates from Afghanistan and features an Ersari tribal design. The rug, made circa 1900, is constructed with wool on wool, demonstrating traditional craftsmanship that is typical of the Ersari weaving tradition. The rug’s primary background color is copper, while the border is rendered in navy, with beige serving as the main color throughout its design.

The Ersari tribe, located near the Amu Darya river in the Emirate of Bukhara, has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. By the 19th century, Ersari rug production evolved to reflect a blend of nomadic influences and settled lifestyles. These carpets embody a fusion of nomadic artistry with commercial adaptations, indicating a significant transformation as the Ersari began producing rugs for a broader market, especially Western consumers.

The design of this particular rug features bold geometric patterns that align with traditional Turkman aesthetics. The central field is adorned with repeating octagonal medallions, each intricately detailed with various geometric motifs. These include smaller, abstract shapes and complex star-like patterns that fill the spaces between the medallions. Earthy tones such as tan, beige, and brown dominate the background, while the medallions and surrounding geometric designs incorporate colors like black, dark blue, olive green, and muted red.

The rug’s borders are distinctive and complement the central field. An inner border adjacent to the central field is thin, outlined with subtle motifs. The primary border, broader and more vibrant, displays a zigzag and diamond pattern using the same hues found in the central design—black, dark blue, and brown—with additional lighter tans and beiges. The secondary border at the outermost edge features a smaller repeating geometric pattern that ties the entire design together.

Symmetry is a notable characteristic, particularly in the alignment of the octagonal medallions, which are arranged in orderly rows and columns. The design’s density and complexity not only highlight the Ersari weavers' skill but also contribute to the rug’s overall visual appeal and historical significance within the decorative arts of Turkmen carpet weaving.
