This Persian Hamadan rug, created circa 1920, is an exquisite example of tribal craftsmanship, reflected in its intricate design and durable construction. Originating from one of the oldest carpet-weaving regions in Persia, Hamadan is renowned for rugs characterized by their robust texture and unique patterns derived from a rich historical and cultural heritage.
Crafted from wool on a cotton foundation, this rug employs the symmetric Ghiordes knot technique, resulting in a coarse yet substantial texture that enhances its longevity. The backdrop features a camel color, juxtaposed by a navy border that frames the design elegantly. The main field, primarily in beige, showcases a complex interplay of geometric and floral motifs. This diversity in design elements is typical of Hamadan rugs, attributed to the variety of villages in the region and their unique artistic contributions.
The design of this rug includes multiple medallions scattered throughout, each featuring detailed geometric and floral patterns. Symmetry is a key aspect, with mirrored elements on either side of the central axis, highlighting the meticulous planning behind its creation. The patterns within the central area also incorporate dark blue and red accents, providing a striking contrast against the muted beige background.
The outer border of the rug is distinguished by its bold red coloring and abstract floral and geometric elements in blue and white. An intermediate, thinner border follows, featuring repetitive dark blue motifs against a black backdrop, while the inner border blends red, blue, and white on a dark background, adding depth to the overall design.
This Hamadan rug exemplifies the weaving traditions of its region, where historical events and diverse ethnic influences converge to create distinct and culturally rich designs. The aesthetic qualities and craftsmanship of the rug provide valuable insights into the artistic expressions prevalent in Hamadan during the early 20th century.

Don’t take our word for it
Last fall, my husband and I purchased a gorgeous silk from you for our Boston Condo. Based on the quality of your rugs and customer service, we decided to visit you again to purchase rugs for our Connecticut home. Luckily, we received your postcard about the tent sale and came home with two more stunning rugs.
I can't say enough good things about this store, especially Susanne and Breanna. I shop at many rug places as I am an interior designer looking for very specific rugs all the time. No one out there compares to this store and their wonderful Sales associates. Thank you Susanne and Breanna for all your help!
Over the past year we purchased three rugs, as well as carpet from L&A. Our experience could not have been more positive and we love what we purchased.
In addition, every single person
in the showroom was beyond helpful, knowledgeable and kind. It was truly a pleasure. Thank you!
Never have I enjoyed spending money as much as at Landry & Arcari!!! Thank you so much for your attention and guidance. The rug I chose grounds the furniture and makes the living room. It is so beautiful and I really appreciate all of your help.
