This rug originates from Hamadan, a notable center for carpet weaving in Persia known for its rich historical and cultural background. Hamadan rugs typically feature tribal designs and this particular piece adheres to that tradition with its intricate and symmetrical patterns. The main field of the rug is a deep navy blue, which serves as the backdrop for a series of five large, repetitive motifs resembling stylized medallions. These motifs are stepped, abstract geometric shapes with pointed ends and house inner elements suggestive of abstract floral or ornamental designs. Primarily rendered in a light peach or dusty salmon color, the motifs include smaller details in blue, yellow, and red.

The rug’s borders contribute significantly to its overall appearance. The innermost border is a thin band in a soft peach color, followed by a narrow border with a simple dotted pattern in blue on a peach background. The main border, which is the widest, features a complex geometric pattern incorporating blue, white, and red on a dark brown or black background. This is supplemented by a secondary, thinner outer border that reprises the smaller pattern elements found in the interior borders.

Handwoven circa 1920, this rug is constructed from wool on a cotton foundation. The use of the symmetric Ghiordes or Turkish knot technique is characteristic of Hamadan rugs, known for their durability and coarse yet substantial texture. The cotton warps and wefts contribute to this robust feel, while single-wefting techniques are often employed.

Hamadan carpets are known for their diverse design elements rooted in local traditions, including angular geometric patterns, arabesques, and curvilinear motifs, stemming from the various ethnic influences within the region. This particular rug retains these distinct design hallmarks, making it a fine representation of Hamadan’s weaving heritage. The motifs and patterns illustrate the historical and cultural influences that have shaped the rug-making practices of the region, further enriched by connections to nearby areas which blend Persian and Caucasian design elements.
