Introducing our exquisite Afghani Herat rug, a true masterpiece in traditional design. Originating from Afghanistan, this rug showcases the skilled craftsmanship of ethnic Turkmen Weavers, predominantly from the Esari Subtribe. The wool used in this rug is sourced from sheep in the Ghazni Province of South East Afghanistan, known for its mountainous terrain that produces longer staple oily higher quality wool for carpet weaving.

To begin the creation process, the raw Ghazni wool is transported to the western side of Afghanistan, around Herat, where it undergoes hand carding and hand spinning into carpet yarn. The rug is then meticulously woven on traditional floor looms, often within the weavers' own homes as part of a cottage industry production. The weaving technique used is an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, further adding to the rug's distinct character.

In terms of construction, this beautiful rug features a navy background with a striking red border, creating a captivating color contrast. The main color scheme is dominated by shades of blue, achieved through the use of natural indigo dye, derived from the leaves of the indigo plant. This dye has been utilized for thousands of years and is renowned for producing vibrant blue hues.

Furthermore, the rug incorporates the use of natural madder root dyes to achieve its shades of red. Madder root dyes, derived from the roots of the madder plant (Rubia tinctorum), have a long history of use as a dyeing agent and can produce a range of warm and cool red, orange, pink, and brown shades.

With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 104, this rug displays an impressive level of intricacy. Based on our meticulous calculations, this item boasts a total of 1,623,951 individually hand-tied knots, a testament to the time and skill invested in its creation.

Measuring at a size of 9'6" x 11'6", this afghan rug is an exemplary representation of traditional design and superior craftsmanship. It features a wool pile on a cotton warp and weft, resulting in a durable and long-lasting piece that will make a remarkable addition to any space.

Immerse yourself in the rich heritage and artistry of traditional Afghan rugs with our Afghani Herat rug. Experience the allure of centuries-old dye techniques and the incomparable beauty of hand-woven rugs.
