This rug is an exemplary specimen of a Persian Heriz rug, a style which traces its origins to the Heris village located in the northwestern region of Iran. Heriz rugs are lauded for their robust construction and distinctive geometric designs, hallmarks of which can be observed in this piece.
The rug employs a rich palette, with the dominant color being a Red with a rust undertone. This forms the background upon which the various design elements are laid out. The primary design is a faceted medallion, an iconic feature found in Heriz rugs. This medallion, fashioned with both geometric and floral motifs, takes center stage, its shape delineated by darker lines to create a striking contrast against the warmer background.
Circling the medallion is an array of similar motifs, consisting of repeating floral patterns, vine scrolls, and palmettes, all rendered in a symmetrical fashion. This central pattern field is enveloped by a broad primary border, teeming with detailed interconnected floral and foliate motifs. Set against a contrasting backdrop, this border provides a sharp demarcation from the central design field.
The primary border is further sandwiched by narrower secondary borders which, although detailed, are designed with a more restrained ornamentation. These elements all fuse together to create a cohesive design, one that invites closer inspection to fully appreciate the craftsmanship on display.
Attributed to the rug are the characteristics of hand weaving. Subtle variations in hue, coupled with the worn facade, suggest that this could either be an antique or crafted to mimic a vintage look. Commonly, such rugs are fashioned out of wool or silk. Observing the intricate detail of the design at hand, a high density of knots can be inferred, which indicates the high-quality craftsmanship prevalent in traditional Persian rugs.
From the information available, it can be deduced that the rug is constructed from wool on a cotton foundation, a combination known for its excellent balance between durability and tactile comfort. This particular rug measures 11' X 18'9", making it ideal for larger environments where its ornate design can be fully appreciated.
Information about this rug's inception suggests that it traces back to the year 1925, during a time where the production of such majestically sized carpets was in demand by Tabriz traders catering to the overseas market. This influence led to the fusion of rustic village craftsmanship and the grandiosity of Persian court artistry, birthing the Heriz design style.
The rug industry of this region also bears the impress of the Mongols, who invaded and eventually settled in northwestern Iran in the 13th century. The result of this influence is apparent in the rug's intricate design and robust build. Also noteworthy is the fine quality of the wool used in this rug, a feature attributable to the chilly climate of the Heriz region, which provides ideal conditions for quality wool production.
The rug's aesthetic appeal is further accentuated by the infusion of design elements borrowed from various tribes including the Turks, Armenians, and Kurds who neighbored the Heris village. This blend of influences, reflected in the unique bold and angular designs of Heriz rugs, distinctly sets it apart from other Persian rugs.
In terms of construction, Heriz rugs, including this particular specimen, feature dense piles known for their longevity. Furthermore, the conscious limitation in the color palette employed in these rugs enhances their adaptability across different settings, making an ideal complement to rooms featuring woodwork.
Despite the generations that have passed since its creation, Heriz rugs, including this piece, continue to retain their craft authenticity and cultural significance even as they remain highly sought after in the global rug market. Serving as both ornamental and functional pieces, Heriz rugs have proven their longevity in both longevity and aesthetic relevance.

Don’t take our word for it

Last fall, my husband and I purchased a gorgeous silk from you for our Boston Condo. Based on the quality of your rugs and customer service, we decided to visit you again to purchase rugs for our Connecticut home. Luckily, we received your postcard about the tent sale and came home with two more stunning rugs.

I can't say enough good things about this store, especially Susanne and Breanna. I shop at many rug places as I am an interior designer looking for very specific rugs all the time. No one out there compares to this store and their wonderful Sales associates. Thank you Susanne and Breanna for all your help!

Over the past year we purchased three rugs, as well as carpet from L&A. Our experience could not have been more positive and we love what we purchased.
In addition, every single person
in the showroom was beyond helpful, knowledgeable and kind. It was truly a pleasure. Thank you!

Never have I enjoyed spending money as much as at Landry & Arcari!!! Thank you so much for your attention and guidance. The rug I chose grounds the furniture and makes the living room. It is so beautiful and I really appreciate all of your help.
