This antique Heriz rug, originating from the Heris village in northwestern Iran circa 1920, exemplifies the tribal weaving traditions of the region. The rug's design is characterized by a bold coral background, a striking blue border, and red as the main color, all crafted from high-quality wool on a cotton foundation. The central design is notable for its geometric motifs and prominent medallions, typical of the Heriz style.
Heriz rugs are renowned for their robust construction and vibrant aesthetic, combining geometric designs with large central medallions that contribute to their distinct visual appeal. The patterns often include interconnected diamond and hexagonal shapes, filled with smaller floral and geometric motifs in a variety of colors such as blue, green, white, and beige, adding depth and complexity to the overall design.
The main border of this particular rug is a prominent dark blue, featuring large hexagonal medallions interspersed with floral and connecting line motifs. This is complemented by secondary borders that include narrower lines with repeating smaller floral and geometric patterns. These carefully woven borders provide a framing that enhances the symmetry and intricate detailing of the central field.
The production of Heriz rugs has its roots in a historical blend of Persian artistic traditions and the influences of neighboring tribes such as the Turks, Armenians, and Kurds. This cultural amalgamation results in the bold and angular designs that are a hallmark of Heriz rugs. The cold climate of the Heriz region contributes to the production of high-quality wool, which further enhances the durability and functional longevity of these rugs.
In terms of historical context, the classic “diamond on a square” medallion design seen in Heriz rugs dates back to the late 19th century. This period marked a resurgence in Persian carpet weaving, integrating the rustic charm of village craftsmanship with the sophistication of Persian court pieces. The detailed and labor-intensive weaving process was often a communal effort, with skills being passed down through generations. The weaving traditions of the region have remained largely unchanged, preserving the authenticity and cultural significance of these antique pieces.
The design motifs often include stylized floral elements and intricate borders, reflecting a blend of folk and sophisticated artistry. Such features make Heriz rugs highly valued in the global market, appealing to collectors and those seeking both aesthetic beauty and functional durability. Despite the passage of time, the traditional techniques used in the creation of Heriz rugs continue to inspire contemporary designs, underscoring their lasting impact on modern textile artistry.
This rug presents a rich history of cultural exchange and skilled craftsmanship, making it a distinguished piece for any setting.

Don’t take our word for it

Last fall, my husband and I purchased a gorgeous silk from you for our Boston Condo. Based on the quality of your rugs and customer service, we decided to visit you again to purchase rugs for our Connecticut home. Luckily, we received your postcard about the tent sale and came home with two more stunning rugs.

I can't say enough good things about this store, especially Susanne and Breanna. I shop at many rug places as I am an interior designer looking for very specific rugs all the time. No one out there compares to this store and their wonderful Sales associates. Thank you Susanne and Breanna for all your help!

Over the past year we purchased three rugs, as well as carpet from L&A. Our experience could not have been more positive and we love what we purchased.
In addition, every single person
in the showroom was beyond helpful, knowledgeable and kind. It was truly a pleasure. Thank you!

Never have I enjoyed spending money as much as at Landry & Arcari!!! Thank you so much for your attention and guidance. The rug I chose grounds the furniture and makes the living room. It is so beautiful and I really appreciate all of your help.
