This Indian rug features a Kars design executed in a transitional style. The background is a striking ink blue, while the border is a contrasting seafoam color. The primary color palette is dominated by shades of blue. It is crafted with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, ensuring both durability and comfort.
The rug is newly woven and has undergone final washing and multiple finishing processes in Jaipur. Chromium dyes are utilized for their color accuracy, lightfastness, and consistency, especially important with the antique finishing techniques applied to these rugs. The production involves smaller contractors who distribute designs and pre-dyed, hand-spun wools to various villages around Jaipur and as far west as Bikaner. Weavers work primarily from their homes and are paid by the square meter.
Rugs from Rajasthan employ an asymmetrical Persian knot, which contributes to the vintage, worn look of these new handwoven rugs. The construction features a double weft foundation: a thick bottom weft with up to 10 plies of dense cotton and a finer, thinner upper weft. The upper weft is threaded loosely, so the white yarn becomes visible after shearing, mimicking the appearance of aged rugs.
The wool used is a blend of Ghazni wool from Afghanistan and South African wool. This blend contributes to the texture and durability of the rug. With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 104, this rug has a total of 1,213,942 individually hand-tied knots.
Visually, the rug presents an intricate, symmetrical pattern. The design features large octagonal and diamond-shaped medallions arranged in a grid-like layout. Each octagon is subdivided into smaller symmetrical segments, often featuring a central motif such as a star or floral design. The border showcases a repeating geometric pattern that frames the entire piece.
The color palette is rich and varied, primarily composed of blues—from deep navy to light pastel—and accented with muted greens, beige, and grey. The contrasts within the octagons create a sense of depth, highlighting the central design elements. The space between the larger shapes is filled with smaller geometric and abstract patterns, adding to the overall density and complexity of the design.
