This antique Khotan rug originates from Central Asia and dates back to around 1920. It embodies a traditional style typical of the region, which is historically significant for its role in the Silk Road trade. The rug's background is a rich orange hue, while the border features a contrasting celadon color.

Khotan rugs are known for their blend of design elements influenced by diverse cultures, including Chinese, Tibetan, Persian, Turkish, and Turkoman styles. This cultural fusion is evident in the unique motifs and design structures showcased in these rugs. Common motifs include geometric shapes, animal forms, floral elements, and pomegranates, the latter symbolizing abundance.

Woven from wool on a cotton foundation, this particular piece reflects the hand-crafted artistry typical of Khotan rugs. The detailed patterns highlight the intricate craftsmanship and cultural identities of the weavers. These carpets often feature a mix of tribal and village aesthetics, making them versatile for various interior styles.

The central field of the rug displays a prominent floral pattern with various vases holding stylized flowers. The background color of the central field is a burnt orange or reddish hue. The vases in the pattern vary in color, including mint green, tan, brown, and pink, with the floral elements in contrasting shades such as pink, green, purple, white, and black.

The border frames the central field effectively, starting with an innermost simple black line followed by a green band adorned with floral and leaf-like or arrow patterns in multiple colors like pink, red, purple, and light green. Notably, large circular floral motifs in pink and green are spaced at regular intervals along the border, enhancing the overall design.

The rug exhibits a degree of symmetry, particularly in the balanced positioning of flowers and vases on either side of the central field, though there are variations in the specific details and colors. The pattern density is moderate, with ample space between elements, allowing each vase and flower to stand out distinctly against the background. Smaller floral elements interweave among the larger designs, adding depth and detail without overwhelming the pattern.

This Khotan rug serves as more than a decorative piece; it is a historic artifact that encapsulates stories of cultural interaction and trade, embodying the synthesis of Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
