Introducing our exquisite rug from Afghanistan, showcasing the timeless design of Serapi, a popular choice for transitional interiors. This rug boasts a light blue background that perfectly complements the ivory border, creating a visually appealing contrast. Carefully handcrafted using wool on cotton, it is a true testament to the skill and expertise of Afghan Turkmen weavers.

Originating primarily from the Esari Subtribe, these rugs are woven by talented artisans using wool sourced from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan. This region's mountainous terrain produces longer staple, high-quality wool, ideal for carpet weaving. The raw Ghazni wool is transported to the western side of Afghanistan, near Herat, where it undergoes hand carding and spinning into carpet yarn.

Crafted on traditional floor looms in the weavers' own homes, in a cottage industry type production, this rug features an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type. The use of cotton warp and weft, with an all-wool pile, ensures durability, while the double wefting and heavily packed depressed warp weaving contribute to its long-lasting nature. These characteristics make it one of the most durable handwoven carpets available.

Centuries-old natural dye stuffs are used to achieve the lovely colors in this rug, including the captivating blue derived from natural indigo dye. Indigofera tinctoria, also known as true indigo, is derived from the leaves of the indigo plant. This age-old dyeing method has been cherished for thousands of years, producing vibrant blue hues that stand the test of time.

With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 80, our rug showcases impeccable craftsmanship. By calculating the KPSI, we estimate that this item features an astounding 895,276 individually hand-tied knots in total. Such attention to detail ensures a rug of exceptional quality and beauty.

Add a touch of elegance to your home with this Afghan Serapi rug, crafted with precision and care by skilled weavers. Its unique design, high-quality materials, and meticulous craftsmanship make it a true statement piece. Transform your space into a haven of sophistication with this remarkable rug from Afghanistan.
