Introducing our exquisite rug from Afghanistan, featuring a stunning Sultanabad design. This transitional piece showcases a background in a captivating dusty rose color, accentuated by a pomegranate border. Its main color is a vibrant red, adding a bold touch to any space. Crafted with care, this rug is made of high-quality wool on a cotton foundation.

Measuring at 8'0" x 8'9", this rug boasts a symmetrical "Persian" knot type, woven by skilled artisans predominantly from the Esari Subtribe. The wool used in this masterpiece comes from the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan, where the mountainous terrain naturally produces an excellent quality of longer-staple, oily wool ideal for carpet weaving. The raw Ghazni wool is then transported to the western side of Afghanistan, around the city of Herat, where it is meticulously carted and spun by hand into carpet yarn.

Each rug is carefully woven on traditional floor looms in the homes of the weavers, keeping the cottage industry spirit alive. The combination of cotton warp and weft, along with a double weft and heavily packed depressed warp weaving technique, results in a highly durable and long-lasting piece. These traditional methods have been passed down through generations, ensuring the utmost quality.

Our rug is dyed using centuries-old, all-natural dye stuffs. The captivating red hue in this piece is derived from madder root dyes, specifically from the Rubia tinctorum plant. This type of natural dye has a rich history and has been cultivated and used in various cultures for centuries. Madder root dyes offer a wide range of warm and cool shades, including red, orange, pink, and brown.

With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 162, our rug showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of the weavers. In fact, we calculated that there are a remarkable 1,625,809 individually hand-tied knots in total.

This rug is a true masterpiece, showcasing the artistry, tradition, and attention to detail that characterize Afghan rug weaving. Experience the beauty of this exceptional piece, and bring a touch of elegance and culture to your space.
